Possibly the most frustrating corner of coaching...but we're all guilty.

You can't write your ABCs with a broken pencil. When we tell you how to fix your pencil, fix it. Don't just go get a new piece of paper and wonder why it's still not writing.

Let me paint a picture of something we have ALL done:

You walk into the gym, joke around with a few people already there on foam rollers, go change, check facebook one more time on your phone...

You're reminded of that nagging shoulder pain when we start the warm-up. We gave you some pre-warm-up mobility, but you just forgot to do it...or didn't want to. No biggy, it'll warm-up and probably be fine and if not, you'll just take the weight light today...

You get halfway through your clean & jerk sets and the pain is really going strong now. You can't go heavier, you're missing cake weight...

You go to complain--I mean, tell us what's going on with your shoulder, ask if you should even do the workout today and what you hear is "Did you do the pre-warm-up mobility I told you to do today?"

...OR HOW ABOUT...

You finish a workout with handstands in it that you had to use the box for. It really bugs you that you can't just kick up to the wall like you've seen so many others learn how to do...

So you ask for some drills, we work with you for a few minutes before you leave and even message you videos or pictures to help you remember...

Two weeks later, there's handstands again and you're no better off this time...

Disappointed and frustrated, you turn to us and ask why you just can't get handstands...

"Did you practice any of the drills we gave you any of the days you were able to come early or stay late?"

What we want to say is "Why aren't you doing what we advised?! You cared enough to ask how to improve. You pay me to teach you this stuff! If you won't do what I'm saying, what's going to HELP YOU, I'm going to start telling you to brush your teeth with rainbows and lick a starfish to fix the problem!"

To everyone who takes our advice and puts it to practice, we greatly thank you!

Like I said, we've ALL been there, myself included. Listen. Do your homework. Let us help you. You can't write your ABCs with a broken pencil. When we tell you how to fix your pencil, fix it. Don't just go get a new piece of paper and wonder why it's still not writing.
